Alexis Mac Allister’s powerful second-half header sealed a deserved 1-0 win for Liverpool over Real Madrid at Anfield, as the Reds delivered a statement performance in the Champions League and matched a long-standing European record.
In a tense and evenly balanced first half, both sides created chances, but the match’s most contentious moment came when Dominik Szoboszlai’s shot struck Aurelien Tchouameni’s hand on the edge of the box. Initially awarded as a free kick to Liverpool, the decision was overturned after a pitchside VAR review, with the officials ruling out both the handball and the foul, much to the frustration of the Anfield crowd.
Justice, however, seemed to arrive just after the hour mark. Mac Allister, one of the smallest players on the pitch, rose above the Madrid defence to meet a pinpoint delivery and powered a header past Thibaut Courtois, who had been in inspired form until that moment. The goal broke the deadlock and sent the home fans into raptures.
Arne Slot’s side were resolute at the back, expertly containing Madrid’s star-studded attack of Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior. Their defensive discipline ensured a clean sheet and helped Liverpool equal Juventus’ record of five European Cup/Champions League victories over Real Madrid without conceding a goal.
Despite the loss, Real Madrid remain in fifth place in the 36-team Champions League table, narrowly ahead of sixth-placed Liverpool on goal difference. For the Reds, this win marks their first set of consecutive victories since September 23 and signals a resurgence in form as they continue their European campaign with renewed confidence.
