Chelsea and Barcelona renew one of the Champions League’s most storied rivalries this week, with both sides desperate for points to stay in contention for the knockout stages. The Opta supercomputer gives Chelsea a slight edge with a 41.7% chance of victory, but history and form suggest this will be a finely balanced contest.
Barcelona have struggled against the Blues in recent years, winning just one of their last nine meetings in the competition. Yet their record away to English clubs is strong, with six wins from their last nine visits.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will lean on the impressive recent dominance of Premier League teams over Spanish opposition, with English sides winning nine of the last ten Champions League clashes between the two nations.
Marcus Rashford has been a revelation since joining Barcelona, contributing five goals in four appearances. His form has helped extend Barça’s remarkable streak of scoring in 24 consecutive Champions League matches, a run that has produced 67 goals. Hansi Flick’s teams have never failed to score in the competition, across 36 matches with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Chelsea’s hopes may rest on teenage sensation Estêvão, who has already scored in both of his Champions League starts. If he finds the net again, he will become the second youngest player to score in his first three Champions League appearances, following Kylian Mbappé. With the youngest average starting XI in the competition, Chelsea’s youthful energy will be tested against Barcelona’s experience.
Injuries could play a decisive role. Chelsea are without Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, Dario Essugo and Roméo Lavia, while Barcelona may be missing Alejandro Balde, Gavi, Pedri and Marc-André ter Stegen. Rashford’s return from illness could be crucial, while Frenkie de Jong is available again after suspension.
The head-to-head record remains tight: four wins apiece and six draws across 14 previous meetings. Chelsea have lost only once at home to Barcelona, and they are unbeaten in 16 Champions League group matches at Stamford Bridge since 2019.
Barcelona, however, have lost just three of their last 20 matches against English opposition, and rising star Lamine Yamal is chasing Kylian Mbappé’s record of ten Champions League goals before turning 19.
