Respected Nigerian cleric Reverend Uma Ukpai dies at 80

The Nigerian Christian community has been plunged into mourning as Rev. Uma Ukpai, an international evangelist and the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, has died.

The news of the death of Ukpai has been confirmed by family sources.

Prophet Joel Ogebe initially posted a cryptic message on X, stating: “A giant has gone to be with the Lord. My father, my father, the chariot of Israel. Heaven rejoices. Uyo.”

Although Ogebe did not mention any names, the post quickly generated reactions online, with some users linking it to Rev. Ukpai, the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, a prominent non-denominational ministry based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Shortly after, a Christian platform, Church Gist, also shared a message on Facebook reporting that the revered cleric had passed on. The post read:

“A GENERAL TAKES A BOW! EVANGELIST UMA UKPAI HAS GONE TO BE WITH THE LORD. REST IN POWER, SIR.”

Later, top gospel minister Pastor Nathaniel Bassey posted a tribute on Instagram to eulogise the departed pastor.

At the time of filing this report, no official statement or confirmation has been issued by his family.
