Iran vows retaliation after US seizes Iran-flagged vessel defying blockade

Iran’s military has warned it will retaliate after US forces fired upon and seized an Iranian-flagged container ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday.

According to a statement carried on state media outlets, a spokesperson for Iran’s top military headquarters, Khatam al-Anbiya, noted that the US in “violation of the ceasefire opened fire on one of Iran’s commercial vessels in the waters of the Sea of Oman, disabled its navigation system, and boarded it” by “deploying” marines.

“Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond to and retaliate for this act of armed piracy by the US Navy,”  the statement reads.

Earlier, US President wrote on his Truth Social platform that the Touska was seized by the US Navy after failing to respond to a warning to stop. Iran said it was a violation of the ceasefire and it would retaliate soon for the “act of armed piracy”.

All eyes are on the potential repercussions, as the question now is whether this will collapse US-Iran talks expected this week. The ceasefire, which the US and Iran have accused each other of violating, expires on Wednesday.

Vice President JD Vance and top US officials will travel to Pakistan for another round of talks on the war with Iran on Monday. Tehran has not publicly confirmed it will attend, with some state media outlets suggesting the talks may not happen. The ceasefire, which the US and Iran have accused each other of violating, expires on Wednesday.

The talks face key sticking points, including control of Iran’s uranium stockpiles and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, where global energy supply has been choked for weeks.
