Nnamdi Kanu convicted on nine terrorism charges

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday, convicted Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of multiple terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

Justice Omotosho, the presiding judge, held that the prosecution had successfully established its case, relying heavily on video recordings in which Kanu was seen issuing threats of violence against Nigeria and its citizens.

The judge held that Kanu extended his terrorism act to the United States of America, when he ordered that the American Embassy be brought down, in a broadcast.

Also, Justice Omotosho classifies Nnamdi Kanu as an “international terrorist,” noting this is due to his intention to “bomb the British High Commission, and to kill the then British high commissioner, Catriona Laing.”

The court’s decision marks a significant development in the years-long legal battle between the separatist leader and the government.
