Kaduna priest dies in bandits den after one month in captivity

The Kaduna Anglican Communion Diocese has announced the death of Edwin Achi, priest of Ebenezer Church located in Ungwan Maijero, Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

Achi was abducted by bandits about a month ago.

The priest, who hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, was kidnapped alongside his wife, Sarah Achi, who is a customs officer, and their daughter, on October 28, after gunmen invaded their residence in Nissi community, near the Kaduna refinery.

Days after the abduction, the kidnappers reached out to the family, demanding a ransom.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, the diocese confirmed Achi’s passing, describing it as “a painful loss to the entire diocese, the clergy, the church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion to the service of God”.

“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing onto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi,” the statement reads.

“Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead.”

The church announced the suspension of its annual ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’ event in honour of the late cleric and appealed for prayers for the safe return of Achi’s wife and daughter, who remain in captivity.
