Owen Hargreaves has issued a strong warning to Premier League leaders Arsenal, insisting that Manchester City remain a serious contender for the title despite trailing by six points. Speaking after City’s emphatic 4-1 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund, Hargreaves praised Pep Guardiola’s side for rediscovering their rhythm and believes they are poised to mount a formidable challenge.
Phil Foden starred with a brace, while Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki also found the net in a dominant display at the Etihad Stadium. The win not only reinforced City’s European credentials but also signaled a resurgence in form that could spill over into their domestic campaign. Currently second in the Premier League, City sit ahead of Liverpool by a single point and will host the Reds in a crucial clash on Sunday.
Hargreaves, speaking to TNT Sports, highlighted the depth and quality of Guardiola’s squad, pointing to the impact of new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and the attacking trio of Haaland, Foden, and Cherki. He noted that last season’s dip in form was largely due to injuries and a loss of confidence, but believes the team is now steadily rebuilding momentum.
He emphasized that while Arsenal have made a strong start and are favorites to win their first title since 2004, they have yet to prove themselves over the full course of a season.
‘As great as Arsenal are, they haven’t done it yet,’ Hargreaves said. ‘The last team you want chasing you is City. They’ve been there and done it, both the players and the manager.’
