Angry youths attack Bago’s convoy, vandalise vehicles over failed cash distribution

Some irate youths in the Bida area of Niger State on Sunday attacked the convoy of state governor, Umar Bago, vandalising several cars in the process and injuring some occupants, including senior government officials, after a failed cash distribution programme.
According to DAILY POST, the governor had earlier promised residents financial gifts ahead of the forthcoming Local Government elections in the state and had asked them to converge to receive the money.
However, the situation was said to have become chaotic after only a few individuals benefited from the funds, leaving many others disappointed and enraged.
In a viral video on social media, some youths in the state are seen stoning a billboard which has the governor’s picture.
“The governor promised that everyone would receive money, but only a few people got anything. That’s when the youths started shouting and attacking,” a resident recounted.
The mob was said to have hurled stones and sachet water at the governor’s convoy, damaging at least six official vehicles. The incident occurred near the town hall in Bida.
“The people were very angry because they waited for him to fulfil his promise. When he didn’t, they lost control,” another eyewitness said.
