Drew Uyi applauds Unity Cup’s growing Influence after Nigeria’s victory over Zimbabwe

FIFA football agent and Unity Cup ambassador Drew Uyi has praised the Super Eagles’ emerging talents following Nigeria’s commanding 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe on Day One of the 2026 Unity Cup at The Valley in London.

The opening fixture delivered excitement, energy, and a glimpse into the future of Nigerian football as debutant Femi Azeez stole the spotlight with a sensational brace, while goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo marked his international debut with a composed clean sheet performance.

Azeez, who currently plays for Millwall in the English Championship, etched his name into Nigerian football history by becoming the first player to score two goals on his Super Eagles debut. His first strike came just five minutes into the encounter after finishing off a flowing team move with a powerful left-footed effort beyond Zimbabwe goalkeeper Future Sibanda.

The 24-year-old attacker added his second goal in the second half, capping another swift attacking sequence and confirming himself as one of the standout revelations of the tournament so far.

Speaking after the match, Drew Uyi expressed his excitement about the next generation of Nigerian talent making a strong statement on the international stage.

“The atmosphere at the Unity Cup has been incredible, and seeing young Nigerian talents step up with such confidence is inspiring. Femi Azeez showed quality, composure, and hunger, while Arthur Okonkwo demonstrated maturity beyond his years with an excellent clean sheet performance. Igoh Ogbu was also outstanding defensively and brought stability to the backline throughout the game.”

Okonkwo, who plays for Wrexham in the Championship, produced a key save in the 71st minute to preserve Nigeria’s advantage and complete a memorable debut between the posts.

Defensively, Czech Republic-based centre-back Igoh Ogbu impressed with a calm and disciplined display, helping Nigeria maintain an impregnable backline alongside Chibuike Nwaiwu and the rest of the defensive unit.

Coach Eric Chelle fielded a youthful and relatively unfamiliar squad as he began the defence of the Unity Cup title, but the fresh faces responded with confidence, intensity, and professionalism.

The match also carried added significance given the Championship connection surrounding the occasion. Both Azeez and Okonkwo represent clubs in England’s second tier, while The Valley — home of Charlton Athletic — is famously linked to reigning African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman.

For Drew Uyi, serving as a Unity Cup ambassador has reinforced the importance of creating platforms that showcase Nigerian excellence globally.

“Competitions like the Unity Cup are vital for discovering and developing talent. Nigerian football has incredible depth, and nights like this prove the future is very bright for the Super Eagles.”

Nigeria will now look ahead to Saturday’s Unity Cup final, where attention will once again be on the emerging stars aiming to continue their impressive rise in green and white.
